EPFO introduces automatic PF transfer for job changers

The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has launched an automated system to transfer provident fund balances when members change employers, addressing a long-standing procedural bottleneck for Indian workers.

Under the new arrangement, eligible EPFO members with Aadhaar-linked Universal Account Numbers (UAN) will no longer need to submit separate transfer applications when switching jobs. The system will process fund transfers automatically, streamlining what has traditionally been a time-consuming administrative process.

The move comes as the EPFO seeks to modernise its operations and reduce friction in member services. Job changes frequently required workers to navigate multiple forms and follow-ups to consolidate their pension contributions across different employers, often resulting in delays.

The automatic transfer facility applies to members whose accounts are properly linked to their Aadhaar identification. EPFO officials have indicated that the system will identify eligible accounts and process transfers without requiring individual intervention, provided the member's credentials are current and verified.

The initiative reflects wider efforts by Indian government agencies to leverage digital infrastructure for citizen services, particularly in the social security sector where millions of organised sector workers contribute to provident funds.
