EPFO launches Rs 15,000 benefit scheme for first-time workers in India

India's primary provident fund regulator, the EPFO, has rolled out a Rs 15,000 benefit scheme targeted at first-time workers entering the formal workforce. The initiative aims to encourage financial participation and literacy among new employees joining organisations covered under the Employees' Provident Fund Act.

Workers earning a monthly salary of up to Rs 1 lakh are eligible to avail of the scheme. The benefit will be distributed across two instalments rather than as a lump sum, ensuring phased disbursement aligned with specific conditions set by the EPFO.

To qualify for the scheme, beneficiaries must meet certain service requirements and demonstrate commitment to financial literacy programmes. These conditions are designed to ensure that the benefit reaches workers who meet minimum tenure standards and show intent to improve their financial awareness.

The EPFO's move is part of broader efforts to strengthen social security coverage for India's organised sector workforce. By providing immediate financial support to newcomers, the scheme seeks to facilitate their integration into formal employment systems while promoting awareness about long-term savings and retirement planning mechanisms.

Eligible workers are advised to verify their compliance with all specified conditions and contact their respective EPFO offices for detailed procedural guidelines on benefit claim submission and verification requirements.
