EPFO raises mandatory PF wage ceiling to ₹25,000 from ₹15,000

The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation has increased the salary threshold for mandatory provident fund coverage, though the change does not automatically trigger pension deductions for all eligible workers. Prior pension membership status remains a critical eligibility criterion.

EPFO raises mandatory PF wage ceiling to ₹25,000 from ₹15,000

The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has raised the mandatory provident fund coverage threshold to ₹25,000 per month, up from the previous limit of ₹15,000, marking a significant expansion in the scope of mandatory savings for organised sector workers.

However, the EPFO has clarified that the increased wage ceiling alone does not guarantee pension scheme eligibility or automatic pension contribution deductions for all workers affected by the revised limit. An employee's previous pension membership status remains a determining factor in establishing eligibility for pension benefits under the Employee Pension Scheme (EPS).

The clarification aims to address confusion among employers and workers regarding the implications of the higher wage threshold. According to EPFO guidelines, workers whose salaries now fall within the newly expanded coverage band must satisfy additional conditions related to their prior enrollment history to qualify for pension scheme benefits.

The move is expected to extend provident fund protections to a larger segment of the workforce, though implementation will vary based on individual membership records and contribution history maintained with the organisation.
