EPFO raises salary ceiling to ₹25,000, impacts provident fund deductions
India's Employee Provident Fund Organisation has increased the salary limit for PF contributions, potentially reducing employee take-home pay. Workers whose provident fund was previously calculated on a ₹15,000 base will now see deductions computed on ₹25,000.

The Employee Provident Fund Organisation's decision to raise the salary ceiling will affect how much workers contribute to their provident fund accounts each month. Under the revised framework, the contribution base has been expanded from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000, marking a significant adjustment to the pension scheme's structure.
For employees earning above the previous threshold, the change means a larger portion of their salary will be subject to PF deductions. The standard employee contribution rate of 12 percent will now apply to the higher ₹25,000 base salary, while employers contribute an additional 12 percent to the fund.
Workers whose monthly salary falls within or exceeds the new ceiling can expect a noticeable reduction in their in-hand salary as larger amounts are diverted to the provident fund account. However, this also increases the corpus accumulated for retirement benefits, as contributions to the EPFO-managed fund grow over time with employer matching contributions and interest.
The measure reflects periodic adjustments made to keep pension scheme parameters aligned with evolving wage structures. Employees should review their salary slips to understand the exact impact on their monthly take-home pay and long-term retirement savings under the revised contribution framework.
