EPFO raises wage ceiling to Rs 25,000, expanding worker coverage

The Employee Provident Fund Organisation has raised its wage ceiling to Rs 25,000, a significant move expected to broaden access to provident fund, pension and insurance benefits across India's workforce. The revision stands to benefit more than 5 million workers who previously fell outside EPFO coverage due to earlier wage thresholds.

The increased ceiling will allow workers earning up to Rs 25,000 monthly to access EPFO protections, including the Employees' Provident Fund scheme, the Employees' Pension Scheme and employee insurance coverage. This expansion represents a major step in extending social security protections to a larger segment of India's organised sector workforce.

While the wage ceiling increase has been formally implemented, the detailed contribution rules governing how employers and employees will contribute under the new threshold remain pending finalisation. The EPFO is expected to release comprehensive guidelines outlining contribution percentages and applicable regulations for workers and employers affected by the change.

Workers and employers are advised to monitor official EPFO communications for the detailed contribution framework. The expansion aligns with broader government efforts to enhance social security coverage and formalise India's workforce participation in mandatory provident fund schemes.
