Two unmanned aerial vehicles crashed onto railway premises near Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Monday during a large-scale private drone event, prompting the Churchgate Government Railway Police to intervene. The drones were part of a coordinated 150-drone display originally approved for Marine Drive and the stadium vicinity.
According to railway authorities, the devices deviated from their programmed flight path, posing a potential hazard to railway operations and passenger safety. The Churchgate GRP recovered both units and subsequently initiated proceedings against the event management company responsible for overseeing the aerial operations.
The incident has raised fresh concerns about the regulation and supervision of large-scale drone displays in densely populated urban areas with sensitive infrastructure. Railway officials have summoned representatives from the event firm to explain the operational lapses and determine whether adequate safety protocols were in place before the event commenced.
Authorities are examining whether the malfunction resulted from technical failure or inadequate coordination with airspace monitoring agencies. This incident underscores ongoing challenges in managing commercial drone operations across Indian cities amid growing demand for aerial entertainment displays.
