Essel Group founder disputes scale of NCLT insolvency claims

The Essel Group founder has sought to clarify the financial position in ongoing insolvency proceedings, distinguishing between total claims filed and those submitted by parties opposing his debt restructuring plan. According to Chandra's statement, the claims from lenders who have objected to his repayment proposal amount to ₹3,992 crore, a significantly lower figure than the ₹22,006 crore total being referenced in discussions around the case.

The distinction appears to centre on how claims are being calculated in the NCLT proceedings. While the larger ₹22,006 crore figure represents the aggregate of all claims filed across the insolvency process, the founder contends that the relevant figure for assessing opposition to his restructuring plan is the considerably smaller ₹3,992 crore amount.

The clarification comes as Chandra pursues court approval for his repayment proposal to resolve the group's financial difficulties. The disagreement over claim amounts could prove material to how the tribunal evaluates the viability and creditor support for his proposed resolution plan. The NCLT's assessment of the claims landscape will be crucial in determining whether the restructuring proposal can proceed.
