Eternal's Q2 profit nearly doubles but disappoints market expectations

Eternal's second-quarter performance reflected a sharp acceleration in profitability, with net profit climbing to ₹125 crore from ₹65 crore in the year-ago period. The 92.3% year-on-year jump underscored improving operational leverage across the company's portfolio. However, the earnings miss versus analyst expectations of ₹271 crore has tempered enthusiasm, highlighting the margin compression challenges facing the conglomerate even as its top line expanded substantially.

Revenue growth proved robust, surging 77.6% in the quarter as the company benefited from strong performance at Blinkit, its quick-commerce platform. The rapid expansion of the fast-delivery service has emerged as a key growth driver, offsetting pressures in other segments. Despite the revenue momentum, rising operational and administrative costs have constrained profitability gains, preventing the company from fully converting its topline expansion into bottom-line growth.

The results underscore the tension between growth and profitability that increasingly defines India's competitive quick-commerce space. While Eternal has demonstrated its ability to scale revenue at an impressive pace, investors and analysts remain focused on whether the company can achieve sustainable profitability at scale. The gap between actual earnings and market expectations suggests the market is closely scrutinizing the path to sustained margin improvement amid intensifying competition and rising costs across the sector.
