The Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) confirmed that Aga tested positive for methylprednisolone, a prohibited corticosteroid, in addition to committing an anti-doping rule violation through evidence tampering. The dual offences resulted in the extended suspension, effectively sidelining the prominent Ethiopian distance runner from international competition through 2030.
Aga's achievements in the sport include victory at the 2019 Tokyo Marathon, one of the world's major marathon events. The ban represents a significant blow to her athletic career and raises fresh concerns about doping compliance within Ethiopian distance running, a sport where the country has produced numerous world-class competitors.
The AIU, which operates under World Athletics, handles investigations and adjudications of anti-doping violations across track and field globally. The organisation has intensified scrutiny of athletes from regions with historical doping concerns, implementing stricter testing protocols and enforcement procedures.
The suspension underscores the sport's increasingly rigorous approach to maintaining competitive integrity. Athletes found in violation of anti-doping regulations face lengthy bans, fines, and potential forfeiture of titles and prize money from competitions where violations occurred.
