EU-backed initiative prepares Sri Lanka for strict packaging waste rules

Sri Lanka is advancing its readiness to meet the European Union's Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) through the CIRCULAR project, an initiative backed by EU funding. The programme aims to equip the country's regulatory framework, industry stakeholders, and enforcement mechanisms with the tools and knowledge necessary to comply with the bloc's increasingly stringent packaging standards.

The PPWR represents one of the EU's most comprehensive efforts to reduce packaging waste and promote circular economy principles across member states and trading partners. For Sri Lanka, adapting to these requirements carries significance given the nation's trade relationships with European markets and the environmental challenges posed by mounting packaging waste.

The CIRCULAR project facilitates knowledge transfer and capacity building among relevant government agencies, private sector operators, and waste management authorities.
