A European Union-funded research project has been launched to investigate the extent and impact of single-use plastics within Sri Lanka's food sector, with the goal of identifying practical alternatives and reduction strategies.
The CIRCULAR project, supported by the EU's European External Action Service (EEAS), brings together researchers and industry stakeholders to examine current plastic consumption patterns across food production, packaging, distribution and retail operations. The research is designed to generate actionable data that can inform policy decisions and business practices.
Sri Lanka's food industry, a significant contributor to the national economy, currently relies heavily on single-use plastic materials for packaging and food preservation. The accumulation of such waste has become an environmental concern, with implications for marine ecosystems and waste management infrastructure across the island.
The project is expected to produce recommendations for sustainable alternatives and circular economy approaches tailored to the Sri Lankan context. Results from the research will be shared with government agencies, food manufacturers, retailers and environmental organisations to support the transition towards more sustainable practices.
The initiative reflects broader EU efforts to support partner countries in addressing plastic pollution and advancing environmental sustainability in key economic sectors.
