EU-backed research initiative targets single-use plastics in Sri Lanka's food sector

Sri Lanka's food sector faces mounting challenges from single-use plastic waste, yet significant gaps remain in understanding the extent and nature of the problem across the industry. Researchers and policymakers lack comprehensive data on where plastics are used, how they flow through food production and distribution networks, and which interventions could deliver the most substantial environmental benefits.

The European Union-funded CIRCULAR project has been established to address these critical information gaps by generating evidence-based research on single-use plastic use in Sri Lanka's food sector. The initiative will map plastic consumption patterns across the food value chain, from production and packaging through to retail and consumption stages.

By identifying specific pain points and high-impact intervention opportunities, the research is expected to inform future policy decisions and industry practices aimed at reducing single-use plastic reliance. The project represents a collaborative effort to create a more sustainable food system in Sri Lanka, aligning with global efforts to combat plastic pollution.

The findings from the CIRCULAR project are anticipated to provide local stakeholders, including food businesses, regulators, and environmental organisations, with actionable insights for implementing targeted plastic reduction strategies.
