The European Union has pledged €10 million (US$11.22 million) toward advancing an ambitious extension of Hanoi's Metro Line 3, marking continued international backing for Vietnam's capital city rapid transit development.
The funding will support technical studies and investment preparation work for the proposed extension, which would connect the existing metro system at Hanoi Station southward to Hoang Mai district. The project aims to improve transportation connectivity to underserved southern areas of the city and reduce congestion on existing routes.
The financial commitment reflects the EU's strategic partnership with Vietnam on infrastructure development and sustainable urban mobility. Metro expansions have become a priority for Hanoi as the city grapples with rapid urbanization and mounting traffic pressures.
Hanoi's Metro Line 3 currently serves key areas of the city. The proposed extension would represent a significant expansion of the network, pending completion of the feasibility studies now supported by EU funding. Officials have not disclosed a timeline for construction should the project proceed to implementation phase.
The contribution adds to growing international investment in Vietnam's public transportation infrastructure, with multiple metro lines under various stages of planning and development across Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.
