EU jet fuel green levy begins January 1 for October bookings

The EU's green levy on jet fuel will come into force on New Year's Day, marking a significant shift in aviation environmental policy across the bloc. Passengers booking flights from October 1 onwards will see the new charges reflected in their ticket prices, with the levy applying to flights departing from EU airports.

For multi-leg journeys, the levy will be calculated based on the immediate destination rather than the final endpoint, simplifying administration and ensuring consistent application across different routing scenarios. This methodology addresses concerns about implementation complexity while maintaining the environmental objectives of the scheme.

The aviation industry secured a temporary reprieve for air cargo operations, with the sector granted a 12-month delay before the levy applies to freight services. Industry representatives had argued that cargo operators, already facing economic pressures, required additional time to adjust operations and absorb compliance costs.

The sustainable aviation fuel levy forms part of the EU's broader push to decarbonize aviation and increase uptake of environmentally-friendly fuels. Airlines and travel operators have been preparing systems to implement the new charge, which is expected to influence both pricing and fuel sourcing decisions across European carriers.
