EU trade status at stake over proposed counter-terrorism legislation, warns opposition

Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa has issued a stark warning that Sri Lanka risks forfeiting its GSP+ trade benefits from the European Union should the government proceed with counter-terrorism legislation he deems oppressive.

In a formal statement, Premadasa alleged that the administration of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake is seeking to introduce stringent legal measures designed to curtail public expression and divert attention from other pressing national issues.

The GSP+ scheme provides tariff advantages to developing nations that meet strict governance and human rights standards. The European Union has previously signalled concerns over legislative proposals it views as inconsistent with democratic norms and fundamental freedoms.

Premadasa's intervention reflects growing political tensions over security legislation, with opposition figures warning that measures ostensibly targeting terrorism could be weaponized against legitimate political activity. The government has not yet formally responded to the opposition's concerns regarding the proposed legislation.
