EU will not allow Britain selective access to single market, Barnier warns

Michel Barnier, who led the European Union's negotiating team during Britain's departure from the bloc, has ruled out any arrangement allowing the United Kingdom to pick and choose which EU single market rules to follow.

Speaking to the BBC, Barnier emphasized that EU member states maintain a unified stance on market access, rejecting proposals for selective compliance with regulatory standards. The message reflects longstanding European policy that access to the single market comes with acceptance of its comprehensive rulebook.

Barnier's intervention comes as discussions continue about the future trading relationship between Britain and the EU following the formal Brexit transition period. The former negotiator's comments suggest that any renegotiation of current arrangements would require Britain to either commit fully to EU market standards or accept continued trade friction.

The EU has previously signaled that arrangements allowing selective adherence to regulations would undermine the integrity of the single market framework. Officials argue that permitting one nation preferential treatment would encourage similar demands from other trading partners and destabilize the bloc's economic architecture.

Britain currently operates under the Trade and Cooperation Agreement signed in December 2020, which maintains tariff-free trade but involves significant regulatory and customs checks. Any attempt to secure closer market integration would face the same regulatory unity requirements that Barnier outlined in his comments.
