European banks deliver mixed Q3 results as profits diverge from forecasts
Deutsche Bank, BNP Paribas, Santander and Standard Chartered have exceeded third-quarter profit expectations, though HSBC disappointed investors and UBS met guidance following the lender's earlier turmoil this year.

Major European financial institutions have reported their third-quarter earnings with results that highlight a diverging performance across the sector. Deutsche Bank, BNP Paribas, Santander and Standard Chartered all posted profits above market expectations, signalling resilience in their core business operations despite ongoing economic headwinds across Europe and Asia.
The better-than-forecast results from these four lenders reflect strong trading revenues and improved credit quality in their loan portfolios. Standard Chartered's outperformance is particularly noteworthy for the Singapore-headquartered bank, demonstrating its continued strength in Asian markets where it maintains significant operations.
However, results were not uniformly positive across the sector. HSBC reported earnings that fell short of analyst expectations, marking a disappointment for the banking giant as it navigates challenging market conditions. UBS, meanwhile, met forecasts in its latest quarterly earnings, a stable outcome following its emergency acquisition of Credit Suisse earlier in the year that had roiled global financial markets.
The mixed earnings season underscores the pressures facing European banks as they contend with higher funding costs, tighter credit conditions and uncertain economic growth prospects. Most lenders have cited the benefit of elevated interest rate environments in supporting profitability, though this advantage may be offset by rising loan losses if economic conditions deteriorate further.
