Eurozone economy grows 0.4% in Q3, defying slower expectations

The European Union's statistics agency reported that eurozone GDP growth came in better than expected in the third quarter, offering a glimmer of economic resilience across the 20-member currency bloc. The 0.4 per cent expansion significantly outpaced economists' consensus forecast of 0.2 per cent growth, suggesting underlying economic momentum remains stronger than anticipated.

While the quarterly growth rate of 0.4 per cent represents a deceleration from the 0.6 per cent increase recorded in the second quarter, the outperformance against market expectations signals that the eurozone economy has not stalled despite headwinds from inflation, rising interest rates, and global economic uncertainty.

The better-than-forecast result may provide some reassurance to policymakers at the European Central Bank as they assess the health of the single-currency economy. The performance comes as the ECB has maintained its restrictive monetary policy stance to combat persistent inflation pressures affecting the region.

Analysts will be watching closely for fourth-quarter data and early 2024 indicators to determine whether the eurozone can maintain this growth trajectory or faces a more pronounced slowdown in the quarters ahead.
