Electric vehicle owners are facing steeper insurance claim costs compared to traditional automobiles, according to recent industry data. Claims for EVs average 14% higher than those for conventional vehicles, driven primarily by the technical complexity and expense of electric powertrains and battery systems. The findings underscore the growing importance of comprehensive coverage as EV adoption accelerates across India.
Battery protection has emerged as a critical insurance component, with 70% of EV policyholders now opting for dedicated battery cover. This adoption rate reflects growing awareness among consumers about potential battery-related risks and the substantial replacement costs involved. Battery damage claims have become increasingly common, particularly during the monsoon season when water ingress poses significant risks to electric systems.
Monsoon-related insurance claims paint a particularly expensive picture for EV owners. Average claim costs during the rainy season reach approximately Rs 65,000, highlighting the vulnerability of electric vehicles to water damage and electrical faults triggered by heavy rainfall. This seasonal pattern has prompted insurers to refine their coverage offerings and risk assessment models.
Geographical disparities in claim frequency have also surfaced in the data. Tier-II cities report higher claim rates at 33 per 100 insured EVs, compared to 30 claims per 100 insured vehicles in Tier-I cities. Industry analysts attribute the difference to varying road conditions, driving patterns, and infrastructure quality across different urban markets. As India's EV market expands beyond major metropolitan areas, insurance providers are adapting their products to address regional risk variations.
