KUALA LUMPUR — The former chief executive officer of Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) stated in court that he could not explain why the fund had brought fraud allegations against him in a separate lawsuit.
Datuk Shahrol Azral Ibrahim Ibrahim made the assertion during proceedings related to matters involving the state investment vehicle, which became the subject of international scrutiny over financial irregularities.
The testimony underscores the complex legal landscape surrounding 1MDB, which has faced numerous investigations and lawsuits in Malaysia and abroad. Multiple former officials and associates of the fund have been pursued through the courts in connection with alleged misconduct.
The case forms part of broader legal action stemming from 1MDB's operations during the period when Shahrol Azral served as its chief executive. The fund, once valued at billions of ringgit, has been at the centre of financial controversy that prompted wide-ranging government inquiries and enforcement actions.
