Ex-Bangsamoro Official Now Seen as Drug Smuggling Mastermind
Philippine authorities have elevated their assessment of a former Bangsamoro lawmaker's role in a failed methamphetamine trafficking operation, characterizing him as the orchestrator rather than merely the financial backer of the P3.5-billion shipment intercepted from Laos.

MANILA – Sultan Edrieza Hadji Nasser Rimbang, a former Bangsamoro official, has been identified as the "mastermind" behind an attempted drug smuggling operation that was intercepted en route from Laos, Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) Director General Isagani Nerez announced Thursday.
Nerez indicated that Rimbang's involvement extended significantly beyond his initial characterization as a financial backer of the illicit shipment. The shift in classification suggests investigators have uncovered evidence of his direct role in planning and coordinating the smuggling attempt.
The intercepted consignment contained approximately P3.5 billion worth of shabu (methamphetamine), marking a major drug seizure for Philippine authorities. The investigation into the trafficking network remains ongoing, with law enforcement intensifying efforts to apprehend other suspected participants in the smuggling operation.
The case highlights the persistent threat of large-scale narcotics trafficking through Southeast Asian routes and the involvement of individuals in positions of authority in such criminal enterprises. Philippine authorities have committed to pursuing all individuals connected to the failed smuggling attempt through the judicial system.
