Ex-Bersih Leaders Push for Disclosure on House Arrest Details

Former electoral reform movement leaders Ambiga Sreenevasan and Maria Chin Abdullah have added their names to a growing coalition demanding greater clarity on house arrest protocols in Malaysia. The duo are among signatories to a joint statement released by civil society organisations and concerned citizens seeking to lift restrictions on information regarding detention procedures and conditions.

The statement represents a coordinated push from 37 civil society organisations alongside 385 individual supporters, including several Members of Parliament. The signatories are calling for authorities to release minutes and documentation related to house arrest practices, citing concerns over transparency and adherence to established legal procedures.

Both Ambiga and Maria, who previously led the Bersih 2.0 movement advocating for electoral reform, have maintained active roles in civil rights advocacy. Their involvement underscores continued attention from prominent civil society figures to governance and detention-related issues within the country.

The joint statement appears aimed at establishing clearer public understanding of how house arrest procedures operate within Malaysia's legal framework, with supporters arguing that transparency serves the interests of both public accountability and rule of law.
