Fernandez appeared before Associate Justice Ronald Moreno on Friday as the court read the graft charges against him during the arraignment proceedings. Third Division Clerk of Court Dennis Pulma formally presented the allegations, which center on an alleged P4 million bribe received by the former BFP chief.

The Sandiganbayan Third Division is hearing the case, which represents one of several corruption investigations targeting former officials in the Philippine government. The charge falls under the anti-graft laws governing public officials and their conduct while in office.

Fernandez's not guilty plea sets the stage for further court proceedings as prosecutors and the defense prepare their respective cases. The outcome of the trial will depend on evidence presented before the Sandiganbayan, the country's specialized court for graft and corruption cases involving government officials.

The case underscores ongoing efforts by authorities to investigate allegations of corruption and bribery within state institutions, including the uniformed services. The Bureau of Fire Protection has been among the agencies subject to scrutiny in recent years over financial management and procurement issues.
