MANILA — Roberto Bernardo, who previously served as undersecretary at the Department of Public Works and Highways, categorically denied any dealings with former House Speaker Martin Romualdez during his testimony before the Sandiganbayan on Thursday.
Under cross-examination by Romualdez's legal counsel, Bernardo stated he could not recall identifying the Leyte congressman as a proponent of infrastructure projects allegedly involved in the kickback scheme. "There is nothing like that," Bernardo said when questioned about any connection between Romualdez and the projects in question.
The testimony is part of ongoing proceedings in a case involving alleged irregularities in major infrastructure undertakings. Romualdez has maintained his innocence in connection with the multi-billion peso scheme. The former DPWH official's statements appear to contradict earlier assertions linking Romualdez to the disputed projects.
The case continues to draw significant attention as it involves high-profile political figures and substantial government funds. Authorities have been investigating the alleged P7.44-billion scheme as part of broader scrutiny into infrastructure project allocation and implementation during the relevant period.
