Experts push for hourly haze updates to guide health decisions

Atmospheric scientists have renewed calls for Malaysian authorities to release air quality index (AQI) readings on an hourly basis, rather than relying solely on daily averages. Proponents of the change argue that real-time data would provide Malaysians with the information needed to make immediate health decisions during periods of poor air quality.

While current 24-hour average measurements offer a reasonable overview of air pollution levels, experts contend that this approach obscures significant hourly fluctuations that can pose acute health risks. By providing hourly updates, residents would be better equipped to adjust outdoor activities, use air filters, or seek medical attention as conditions warrant.

The push for increased reporting frequency comes as Malaysia faces recurring haze episodes, particularly during the dry season. More granular data would allow schoolchildren, outdoor workers, and vulnerable populations such as the elderly and those with respiratory conditions to take targeted protective measures.

Atmospheric specialists suggest that implementing hourly AQI releases would require minimal additional investment, as monitoring stations already collect data at such intervals. The information is currently aggregated into 24-hour figures before public release, meaning the infrastructure to support more frequent reporting largely exists.
