A Vadodara resident has reported a major cybercrime case after losing approximately Rs 92 lakh in what police say is a sophisticated investment fraud scheme. The incident originated from a casual friendship connection on Facebook that eventually led to promises of extraordinary returns through cryptocurrency trading.
The scammer initially convinced the victim of legitimacy by guaranteeing returns of 50 to 60 percent on cryptocurrency investments. In the early stages of the fraudulent scheme, small amounts of money were returned to the investor, establishing false credibility and encouraging larger investments.
The deception unraveled once the victim transferred substantial sums into the scheme. Subsequent attempts to withdraw funds or recover investments proved unsuccessful, with the fraudster becoming unresponsive. By this point, the accumulated losses had reached Rs 92 lakh.
The incident highlights the growing menace of online investment frauds targeting Indian citizens through social media platforms. Cybercriminals exploit the trust-building potential of online friendships to lure victims into fake trading schemes. Authorities have urged citizens to exercise caution when receiving unsolicited investment opportunities through social media and to verify the credentials of any platform offering guaranteed returns before committing funds.
