Families escalate protest as housing crisis drags past 100 days

Residents of the P&T housing complex at Mundamveli have vowed to intensify their agitation, threatening to prevent government ministers from moving freely if their rehabilitation demands are not met. The protest by 78 families has now crossed the 100-day mark, with grievances centred on the severely dilapidated condition of their flats and the lack of concrete steps towards resolution.

According to the protest committee, minimal headway has been achieved despite months of demonstrations. While authorities announced a probe by the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau into alleged irregularities in the construction process, residents contend this falls short of addressing their immediate housing crisis. The families have long sought alternative accommodation or comprehensive remedial action on their current units.

The escalation to threatened blockades underscores growing frustration among residents who say their concerns have been sidelined by administrative delays. The protest committee has indicated that without firm commitments on rehabilitation timelines and implementation, the movement will enter a more disruptive phase. Housing advocates have urged state authorities to prioritise finding a resolution before the situation deteriorates further.
