Family alleges police brutality in custody death near Colombo

Francis Durage Ishara Harsha Kumara, a father of one from Munamale Watta in Kiriwaththuduwa, died while in the custody of Homagama Police Headquarters in what his family describes as a case of police violence. According to relatives, the man sustained injuries consistent with a severe assault while under police supervision.

The Homagama Police Headquarters confirmed that Kumara had been arrested and was in their custody at the time of his death. However, the circumstances surrounding his death remain disputed, with police accounts differing from the allegations made by family members.

The incident has raised fresh concerns about detainee safety and accountability within police custody facilities. Authorities have not yet released official statements regarding the cause of death or the circumstances of his detention.

The case comes amid ongoing debates in Sri Lanka about police conduct and the need for enhanced oversight mechanisms in custodial settings. Family members have indicated their intention to pursue the matter further through legal channels.
