Family wealth emerges as major factor in student science performance

Parent Action Group for Education (PAGE) has underscored the substantial influence of family socioeconomic background on student performance in science, citing significant achievement gaps revealed in international assessments.

According to the group's analysis, students from the top 25% of socioeconomic backgrounds score approximately 82 points higher in science than their peers from the bottom 25%. This pronounced differential underscores how economic circumstances and family resources shape educational outcomes across different student populations.

The findings align with broader research indicating that socioeconomic factors—including household income, parental education levels, and access to learning resources—play a critical role in determining academic success. Students from more affluent families typically benefit from greater access to quality education, private tutoring, educational materials, and supportive home environments that facilitate learning.

PAGE's emphasis on these disparities reflects growing concerns among education advocates about equity and access in the school system. The group's observations suggest that addressing achievement gaps will require targeted interventions to provide disadvantaged students with additional support and resources.
