Faridabad farmer's radish crop destroyed by allegedly defective seeds

Rameswar Sharma, a farmer from Faridabad, has filed a complaint with the consumer forum demanding 200,000 rupees in compensation after his radish crop was destroyed by allegedly defective seeds purchased in November 2023.

According to Sharma's account, instead of producing radishes as expected, the plants began developing grain-like stalks following germination. The unexpected outcome led to a complete loss of the intended harvest, forcing the farmer to seek legal recourse against the seed vendor.

Sharma has filed his case through the consumer protection mechanism, alleging that the seed supplier sold him substandard or adulterated seeds without proper disclosure. The claim of 200,000 rupees is intended to cover his losses from the failed crop and expenses incurred during the cultivation process.

The dispute highlights ongoing concerns among Indian farmers regarding seed quality and vendor accountability. Agricultural inputs, particularly seeds, remain a critical factor in crop success, and instances of poor-quality seeds reaching farmers continue to affect rural livelihoods across the country.

The consumer forum's decision on the case is pending. Such complaints underscore the need for stricter quality control mechanisms in the agricultural inputs supply chain and better consumer protection for farming communities.
