Farm science centres scaling up technology transfer to rural India

The Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs), a countrywide network of agricultural extension centres, are intensifying efforts to disseminate cutting-edge farming technologies to cultivators across India's rural heartland. According to an official from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), these district-level institutions are functioning as critical intermediaries in translating research into practical agricultural solutions that benefit farmers directly.

The KVKs operate by conducting demonstrations, organising training programmes, and providing on-farm support to help farmers adopt improved crop varieties, sustainable soil management practices, and resource-efficient cultivation methods. By working closely with research institutions and government agencies, the centres are helping farmers access innovations that can enhance productivity and reduce input costs.

The extension network's approach focuses on location-specific solutions tailored to regional agro-climatic conditions, soil types, and cropping patterns. This customisation ensures that technologies promoted through the KVKs are relevant to local farming communities rather than applying a one-size-fits-all model across diverse geographical areas.
