MANILA — The Federation of Free Farmers (FFF) on Wednesday called on Agriculture Secretary Francisco P. Tiu-Laurel, Jr. to demonstrate "delicadeza" by stepping back from his post while investigations proceed into the suspected unlawful importation of rice worth approximately P395 million.

The farmers' organization's appeal comes as authorities examine circumstances surrounding the questionable rice shipments. The FFF argued that a temporary leave of absence would allow the secretary to address the allegations without distraction and preserve the integrity of the Department of Agriculture during the inquiry.

The alleged illegal rice importation has drawn scrutiny from various sectors concerned about the impact on domestic rice farmers and the agricultural industry. Officials have not yet released comprehensive details regarding the scope or timeline of the investigation.

The appeal underscores growing pressure on the agriculture chief to demonstrate accountability as the probe advances. The FFF represents farming communities across the Philippines and has historically advocated for policies protecting local agricultural interests.
