Isniah Daud was operating her kuih stall near her home in Kuching when a neighbour alerted her to signs of structural danger. Her husband's immediate decision to get the family out of the house proved critical when, moments after they evacuated, the riverside dwelling collapsed into the river below.
The family had been living in the wooden structure, which showed increasing signs of instability due to its proximity to the waterway and ongoing erosion issues in the area. Despite Isniah's initial reluctance to leave, her husband's quick judgment and decisive action ensured all family members, including the three daughters, reached safety before the collapse occurred.
Local authorities have begun investigations into the incident, examining whether factors such as riverbank erosion, construction standards, or inadequate building regulations contributed to the structural failure. The incident highlights ongoing concerns about housing safety in riverine communities across Sarawak, where many families continue to live in traditional wooden structures vulnerable to environmental pressures.
No injuries were reported as a result of the collapse. The family is receiving support from local relief organisations as they rebuild their lives following the loss of their home.
