Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh has refused to offer guidance on the US central bank's interest rate decisions at forthcoming meetings, despite persistent inflation concerns that are expected to drive further monetary tightening.
Speaking at a gathering of financial leaders in Bangkok, Warsh emphasised the Fed's primary focus on achieving price stability. "At the Federal Reserve, we made very clear that we would deliver price stability, and we removed a dose of accommodation about a month ago," he said during a discussion with International Monetary Fund Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva. "I don't prejudge meetings. I don't believe in saying now what I might do at the meetings that we have in the balance of this year."
The comments come after the Fed's September decision to raise its benchmark interest rate by 0.25 percentage points to approximately 3.9 per cent, marking its first rate increase in three years. Market analysts widely expect additional hikes in the coming months as the US central bank seeks to temper stubborn inflation and moderate consumer spending.
Warsh's cautious approach reflects the Fed's desire to maintain flexibility in its policy decisions while signalling its unwavering commitment to controlling price pressures. The central bank has not disclosed its specific plans for October and December meetings, preferring instead to assess economic data as it becomes available.
