BACOLOD CITY — The Federation of Urban Poor (FED-UP) used the occasion of former Senator Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino Jr.'s death anniversary Friday to renew calls for ethical governance and moral leadership in the Philippines.
Approximately 100 FED-UP members assembled along Araneta Street in Bacolod City on August 21, carrying Philippine flags and yellow ribbons as they honored the nationalist politician assassinated 43 years ago. The gathering underscored the organization's push for public officials to demonstrate integrity in their service.
The commemoration reflects ongoing concerns among civil society groups about standards of conduct in government. FED-UP's demonstration highlighted the continued relevance of Aquino's legacy as a symbol of resistance to corruption and advocate for the marginalized sectors of society.
Aquino's assassination in 1983 became a defining moment in Philippine history, galvanizing the popular movement that eventually led to the 1986 People Power Revolution. His memory continues to inspire advocacy for accountability and reform in public institutions.
