Festive season may see surge in chicken and egg prices

The Sri Lanka Animal Production Association has flagged concerns over poultry and egg availability during the festive season, warning that prices could climb significantly in coming weeks. Association Chairman Ajith Gunasekara attributed the expected surge to ongoing delays in maize import approvals, which have disrupted the supply chains for livestock feed across the island.

With maize shipments held up at the border, local producers have increasingly turned to rice as a substitute feed ingredient. This shift has prompted a marked decline in poultry meat and egg output, as rice lacks the nutritional profile required for optimal animal feed formulations.

The timing presents a particular challenge for consumers, as the festive season traditionally sees heightened demand for chicken and eggs across Sri Lankan households. Industry officials have urged relevant authorities to expedite maize import clearances to avert further production shortfalls.

The Association's warning comes amid broader concerns about food security and pricing volatility in Sri Lanka's agricultural sector. Without swift intervention to restore maize supplies, the poultry industry faces sustained pressure on production volumes through the peak consumption period ahead.
