The Finance Ministry has cleared a scheme designed to strengthen India's solar polysilicon production capacity, marking a significant step toward building indigenous manufacturing capabilities in the renewable energy sector. The in-principle approval signals the government's commitment to reducing dependence on imported polysilicon, a critical raw material for solar photovoltaic cell production.
Polysilicon is a key feedstock in the manufacture of solar panels, and India's domestic production has lagged far behind demand, necessitating substantial imports. The proposed scheme aims to incentivize and support domestic manufacturers to establish polysilicon production facilities, thereby creating a more self-reliant supply chain for India's expanding solar energy industry.
The measure aligns with the government's broader strategy to boost solar capacity and achieve renewable energy targets. By developing local polysilicon manufacturing, India seeks to lower costs, create employment, and enhance the competitiveness of its solar sector both domestically and internationally.
The scheme requires Cabinet approval before moving to the implementation stage. Officials indicated that the formal government nod would enable the rollout of financial incentives and regulatory frameworks necessary to attract investment and support manufacturers in establishing production capacity.
