Finance Ministry launches month-long pre-Budget consultation cycle

The Budget Division of the Finance Ministry has announced a comprehensive month-long consultation process beginning October 12, 2026, as part of preparations for the Union Budget 2027-28. The pre-budget discussions will focus on finalizing Revised Estimates for 2026-27 and Budget Estimates for 2027-28 across all government grants and appropriations.

The consultation cycle will be led by the Secretary (Expenditure) and will continue through November 13, 2026, according to a formal notice issued by the ministry on September 23. The structured schedule has been carefully prepared to accommodate the varied requirements of different departments and ministries.

All ministries and departments have been directed to submit required documentation and budget details by October 6, 2026, to ensure smooth progression of the discussions. The advance circulation of the meeting schedule provides agencies sufficient time to prepare comprehensive proposals and financial submissions for their respective portfolios.

The pre-budget consultation meetings represent a standard component of India's budgetary process, allowing the Finance Ministry to engage directly with spending departments and review their financial requirements before the formal budget presentation. Upon completion of these consultations, the Budget Estimates for 2027-28 will be provisionally finalized.
