Finance Ministry urges banks to limit disruption during three-day strike

The Ministry of Finance has directed public sector banks to take measures to reduce disruption to customers during the upcoming three-day strike, which will impact banking services across the country from September 28 to 30.

In response to the directive, banks have issued advisories recommending customers complete essential transactions well in advance of the strike period. Financial institutions have specifically encouraged account holders to utilise digital banking platforms and online channels for their requirements during the shutdown, as these services are expected to remain operational.

The advisories suggest customers prioritise time-sensitive transactions such as bill payments, fund transfers, and loan applications before the strike commences. Banks have also advised depositors to withdraw sufficient cash in advance and ensure adequate planning for any critical financial needs during the three-day period.

Digital channels including mobile banking applications, internet banking portals, and automated teller machines are likely to function normally during the industrial action, providing customers with alternative means to conduct routine transactions. The advisory underscores the banking sector's commitment to maintaining essential services despite the workforce action.

Employees of public sector banks have called the strike to press various demands, with the industrial action expected to impact branch operations significantly across the country during the specified period.
