Finland taps Musk's Starlink to bolster Ukraine's winter defence against Russia

Ukraine's air defence capabilities face severe strain as Russian ballistic missile strikes have reached record levels, depleting Kyiv's already limited stocks of interceptor missiles needed to protect civilian infrastructure and military installations. SpaceX's Starlink satellite internet service, activated by Elon Musk over Ukrainian territory shortly after Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022, has become a critical communications backbone for Ukrainian forces and civilians. The network has provided reliable connectivity in areas damaged by Russian strikes and has proven essential for military coordination.

The focus on winter preparedness reflects growing international concern about Ukraine's ability to sustain its defence as the conflict enters its third winter. Finland's efforts to mobilise additional resources underscore the urgency of addressing Ukraine's air defence gap before weather conditions and Russian escalation compound existing vulnerabilities.
