Fintech firms accelerate merchant push as UPI MDR regime returns

India's leading fintech companies are intensifying their merchant network expansion strategies in response to the return of merchant discount rates (MDR) on UPI payments, a development that has reshuffled the economics of digital transaction processing across the country.

PhonePe, Paytm, Pine Labs and MobiKwik are among the platforms significantly scaling up their merchant acquisition teams and accelerating point-of-sale device deployments to capture market share in the newly restructured payments landscape. The reinstatement of MDR, which creates revenue opportunities for payment processors, has prompted these companies to invest heavily in on-ground expansion to broaden their merchant base before competitors consolidate gains.

The National Payments Corporation of India has complemented these private sector efforts by announcing a Rs 3,000-crore fund designed to strengthen infrastructure and support participants across the digital payments ecosystem. This capital injection is expected to facilitate faster merchant onboarding and deployment of payment acceptance devices in underserved markets.

Analysts note that the combination of MDR's return and NPCI's financial support has created a favorable environment for payment platforms to expand beyond metropolitan areas into tier-2 and tier-3 cities. The competitive push among fintech firms is expected to accelerate digital payments penetration and merchant digitization across India's retail sector.

The timing of these expansion efforts underscores how regulatory and policy shifts in India's payments space continue to shape the strategic priorities of fintech players operating in one of the world's fastest-growing digital payments markets.
