Fire bureau urges residents to evacuate early as monsoon rains persist

The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) has issued an appeal for residents in flood-prone communities to undertake proactive evacuations as the Philippines continues to experience monsoon rains. The call came during a forum held by the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) on Thursday, where Fire Superintendent Anthony Arroyo, chief of the BFP Public Information Service, emphasized the importance of early preparedness measures.

According to fire protection officials, waiting until weather conditions deteriorate significantly puts residents and rescue personnel at greater risk. Communities prone to flooding and landslides are being encouraged to establish evacuation plans ahead of severe weather events rather than responding reactively once disasters strike.

The appeal underscores ongoing concerns about seasonal flooding in the Philippines, which regularly impacts low-lying areas and informal settlements during the rainy months. Local government units have been advised to coordinate with the BFP and other disaster response agencies to ensure evacuation routes and temporary shelters are prepared in advance.

Officials stressed that timely evacuation decisions protect vulnerable populations, including children, elderly citizens, and persons with disabilities. The BFP's guidance is part of broader disaster preparedness efforts aimed at reducing casualties and property damage during the annual monsoon season.
