ILIGAN CITY — A massive fire razed roughly 150 stalls at the central market in Zone 10 Poblacion in the pre-dawn hours of Sunday, according to fire officials here.
Fire Officer 1 Renzie B. Reuyan, fire and arson investigator with the Bureau of Fire Protection Central Fire Station, confirmed the extent of the damage. The fire consumed the market structures, leaving behind charred remains and displaced vendors who depended on the facility for their livelihoods.
The Bureau of Fire Protection has launched an investigation to determine what triggered the blaze. Officials are examining the market's electrical systems and other potential ignition sources as part of their preliminary inquiry.
The fire adds to the growing list of market disasters in the region, highlighting concerns about fire safety infrastructure in commercial establishments across Mindanao. Local authorities have yet to release estimates of the total financial losses from the incident.
Vendors affected by the fire have appealed to city officials for assistance as they work to restore their businesses and recover from the sudden destruction.
