LABUAN, Oct 18 — A major fire swept through a kongsi house in Labuan on Thursday, completely destroying 26 wooden residential units used by construction workers.
The blaze engulfed the workers' quarters, which consisted of traditional shared accommodation commonly known as kongsi houses. Such facilities typically house migrant workers and labourers employed on construction projects across Malaysia.
Emergency responders attended to the scene and brought the fire under control. Authorities confirmed that no casualties or injuries were sustained in the incident, though the complete loss of the 26 units represents a significant setback for the workers accommodated there.
Investigations into the cause of the fire are understood to be underway. The incident highlights the vulnerability of wooden structures used for worker housing and raises questions about fire safety standards in temporary accommodation facilities.
Labuan authorities have not yet disclosed details regarding alternative accommodation arrangements for the displaced workers or the estimated cost of damages from the fire.
