In July 1994, astronaut Chiaki Mukai carried four medaka fish into orbit as part of a pioneering biological experiment designed to understand how microgravity affects reproduction in living organisms. The small freshwater fish, commonly used in scientific research, proved to be ideal subjects for studying fundamental life processes beyond Earth's atmosphere.

During the mission, the adult fish adapted to their weightless environment and laid a total of 43 eggs. In a significant finding for space biology, eight of these eggs successfully hatched while still in orbit, marking an important milestone in understanding reproduction outside Earth's gravitational field.

Upon returning to Earth, the adult medaka fish underwent a gradual recovery process as they readjusted to normal gravity. The young fish that had hatched in space, meanwhile, continued to develop at normal rates, demonstrating that early developmental stages are not adversely affected by the microgravity environment.

The successful reproduction and development of medaka fish in space provided valuable insights into biological processes in microgravity and has contributed to ongoing research into how organisms adapt to extraterrestrial conditions. The findings remain relevant to understanding life support systems for future long-duration space missions.
