The legacy of fish-stocking programmes at Mount Rainier National Park is now recognised as a significant threat to the park's native aquatic biodiversity, with introduced species dramatically altering the ecological balance of alpine lakes and streams that evolved without such predators.

Historical stocking initiatives, conducted throughout much of the 20th century to support recreational fishing, introduced non-native fish species into waters that previously supported only native amphibians and invertebrates. These introduced populations have since thrived, preying on and competing with vulnerable native species that lack evolutionary defences against the newcomers.

Ecologists note that the introduced fish have proven particularly destructive to native amphibian populations, including sensitive species endemic to the Cascade region. The predatory impact extends beyond direct consumption, as the presence of non-native fish has fundamentally altered food web dynamics and habitat usage patterns across multiple alpine lakes.

Park officials and conservation scientists are now working to reverse the damage through removal programmes and habitat restoration efforts. However, eradicating established non-native populations from remote alpine environments presents substantial technical and logistical challenges that will require sustained commitment over many years.
