Fish Workers Federation to Protest Over Land Rights, Reservation Issues

The All India Fish Workers Federation has announced plans for a major protest campaign, demanding the Union government withdraw its blue economy policy, which leadership claims prioritises multinational corporate interests over the livelihoods of India's fishing communities.

Federation representatives argue that the policy framework effectively subjugates coastal waters and land to foreign and large-scale commercial operators, marginalising traditional and artisanal fishing workers who have depended on these resources for generations. The protest will centre on demands for greater land rights protections and expanded reservation policies for fishing community members in government and private sector employment.

The move reflects growing unease among fishing worker organisations over how economic liberalisation policies affect coastal communities. Leaders contend that without explicit safeguards and reserved employment opportunities, the blue economy initiative will accelerate displacement of small-scale fishing operations in favour of industrial-scale ventures.

The federation has indicated the campaign will include demonstrations across multiple coastal states, aiming to pressure the government into reconsidering its approach to maritime economic development and incorporating stronger protections for traditional fishing communities.
