Authorities in Batangas City have netted five suspects in an overnight crackdown on cigarette smuggling, dismantling what police described as an illicit tobacco distribution network. The Calabarzon regional police office reported that operatives from the Batangas police conducted the buy-bust operation on Thursday night, apprehending the suspects identified by their aliases as "Gelo" and others.

Police seized a total of P603,942 worth of smuggled and illicit cigarettes during the operation, according to a report released Friday by the regional police command. The contraband cigarettes were believed to be destined for distribution in local markets, undercutting legitimate tobacco products and depriving the government of substantial tax revenue.

The five suspects are being held pending the filing of appropriate charges related to cigarette smuggling and violation of tobacco trade regulations. The operation underscores ongoing law enforcement efforts to combat the illegal cigarette trade across the Calabarzon region, which authorities say continues to threaten legitimate businesses and government revenues.
