Five local government units in Batangas province have extended the suspension of face-to-face classes to Wednesday as the southwest monsoon brings continued heavy rainfall to the region. Batangas City and the municipalities of Calaca, Bauan, Lobo, and Tingloy announced the extended class suspension on Tuesday afternoon following assessments of weather and ground conditions.
The decision to prolong the school closure came as rainfall persisted throughout the province, with officials concerned about the safety of students and teachers traveling to educational institutions. The suspension affects all grade levels, from elementary through senior high school.
The southwest monsoon, locally known as the habagat, typically brings significant precipitation to areas in Luzon and Visayas during the wet season. Communities in Batangas have experienced repeated instances of flooding and landslides during periods of heavy monsoon activity.
Educational institutions in the affected municipalities are expected to resume in-person instruction on Thursday, pending further assessments of weather conditions and the stability of roads and infrastructure. Local officials urged residents to exercise caution and avoid unnecessary travel during the period of heavy rains.
