Five elephants compete for prime Dasara procession role in Karnataka

Five tuskers have entered the final phase of selection for the coveted role of lead elephant in Mysuru's renowned Dasara procession, one of India's most significant cultural festivals. The elephants are undergoing rigorous evaluation to determine which will have the honour of carrying the golden howdah, or 'ambari', during the grand procession that marks the climax of the ten-day celebration in Karnataka.

The selection criteria for the ceremonial position are stringent, taking into account the elephant's physical condition, temperament, training level, and suitability for the elaborate public procession through Mysuru's streets. Officials assess each tusker's ability to handle the ceremonial attire, crowds, and extended periods of participation in the festival festivities without stress or disturbance.

The Dasara festival, celebrated in September-October each year, draws lakhs of visitors to Mysuru and stands as a significant event in Karnataka's cultural calendar. The procession, featuring the selected tusker adorned in traditional regalia, remains the festival's centrepiece, with the lead elephant becoming an integral part of the historic celebration that dates back centuries.
